moses - the word in the wilderness
June 21, 2020 | Matt Ware
Everyone goes through wilderness seasons in their lives, but MOSES was a wilderness expert! From 40 years alone in one wilderness to 40 years of leading Israel through another, his story shows us the power of the journey through the wilderness; it shapes us, develops us and forms us into the people God has called us to be. A look at the life of MOSES reveals that the wilderness isn’t something we just endure; it’s something we can embrace!
The Word in the Wilderness
1. Word of VISION
Exodus 3:1-2, 7-8, 10 (ESV) Now Moses … led his flock to the west side of the wilderness … 2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 7 Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, 8 and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey … 10 Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.
2. Word of DIRECTION
Exodus 13:21-22 (ESV) And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. 22 The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.
John 16:13 (ESV) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.
John 14:16-17 (ESV) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever … You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
3. Word of INSTRUCTION
Exodus 24:12-13 (ESV) The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.”
4. Word of CONNECTION
Exodus 33:11 (ESV) The Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.
Exodus 33:18-19, 21-23 (ESV) Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ … 21 And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”
